Falling Upward: Harvest Sunday School Class
Begins Sunday, August 31 | 10am | Room 336
Join the Harvest Sunday School Class this fall for a 12-week study of Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr. Beginning Sunday, August 31, this study invites participants of all ages to explore how life’s challenges and losses can open the door to deeper spiritual growth.
Rohr offers a fresh perspective on the second half of life, showing how what may feel like “falling down” can actually become “falling upward” into greater wisdom and spiritual richness. Together, we will reflect on how faith grows not only through success, but often through the struggles and setbacks that shape us.
All are welcome to be part of this journey of learning and renewal.

North Texas International Overdose Awareness Day
North TX Overdose Awareness Day
Sunday, August 31 · 6:30 p.m.
Lawn of Denton Courthouse on the Square
International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on August 31 each year to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died as a result of drug overdose.
On this night, the courthouse and downtown skyline will light up purple in support of this cause. The event will include featured speakers, 40+ resource providers, live music, food, balloon art, prayers from our pastors, and a memorial. This is a free event open to the public. This year will feature live music from our FUMC Denton Modern Band and prayers from our pastors. Here’s what this event is all about:
Unite and educate the community against the opioid epidemic
Provide resources and support for individuals and families struggling with addiction
Reduce the stigma of overdose and addiction
Remember those who have lost their lives to overdose
Learn more at www.roonow.org and www.overdoseday.com
In 2018, the Roland Family created North TX Overdose Awareness Day in memory of Randy Roland and have hosted this event each year with the help of friends, organizations, businesses, and the City and County of Denton. NTXOAD has become a meaningful community event with ever increasing awareness and attendance. If you’ve ever wrestled with questions like “Can I be LGBTQIA+ and follow Jesus?” or “What does the Bible really say about LGBTQIA+ people?”—you are not alone, and you are not the first. Together, we’ll dig into scripture, unpack the “clobber passages,” explore inclusive readings, and reflect on how identity, gender, and sexuality intersect with faith.
Each session will include a short presentation followed by group conversations, led by queer leaders from Glow and supported by Pastors Scott and Raegan. Whether you’re deconstructing, reconstructing, or simply curious, you are welcome to join us! This space is created first and foremost for LGBTQIA+ people who are reconciling their faith and identity—but it’s also for the people who love them and are doing that work too. Whether you’re queer, questioning, or a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, or partner trying to understand how queerness and Christianity can coexist, this is a space to ask honest questions, explore new ideas, and discover what true affirmation looks like.
Come find community. Come ask your questions. Come see why we believe queerness is not only compatible with faith—but a holy reflection of the nature of God.

Educational Workshop on Public Education & Advocacy in Texas
Tuesday, August 19, 2025, 6:30-8:30pm in Miller Center, FUMC Denton
Registration Required | Free Event | Doors open at 6pm
Join us for an important community-wide educational workshop about the current state of public education in Texas. Learn about the impact of recent legislation, what’s happening in local school districts, and how we can faithfully advocate for high-quality, accessible education for all—reflecting the Methodist Social Principles.
The workshop will be led by Kelley Thomas from Raise Your Hand Texas. Kelley Thomas is the Regional Advocacy Director for Raise Your Hand Texas in Collin and Denton Counties. Her dedication to public education advocacy started with her child's kindergarten enrollment in Plano ISD and her involvement with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Over time, Kelley held PTA leadership roles at the campus, district, and state levels. She led Plano ISD's Council of PTAs from 2018-2020, earning the 2020 State Board of Education Heroes for Children Award. Kelley continues to participate at the state level of the PTA as Vice President Programs & Resources. Her advocacy work also includes roles with the Junior League of Collin County and the Plano ISD Education Foundation.
This event is free and open to everyone! We hope to see you there.

Men’s Book Club
Join our next Men’s Book Club at Zera’s Coffee, 420 E. McKinney, Denton. The book chosen is: Framed: Astonishing True Stories of Wrongful Convictions by John Grisham & Jim McCloskey. Discussion will be encouraged and occasionally we may even talk about the book. Even if you don’t read, come and enjoy the fellowship. Please contact Bob Voss 972-965-9605 for more information.
Book Description: A fundamental principle of our legal system is a presumption of innocence, but once someone has been found guilty, there is very little room to prove doubt. These ten true stories shed light on Americans who were innocent but found guilty and forced to sacrifice friends, families, and decades of their lives to prison while the guilty parties remained free. In each of the stories, John Grisham and Jim McCloskey recount the dramatic hard-fought battles for exoneration. They take a close look at what leads to wrongful convictions in the first place and the racism, misconduct, flawed testimony, and corruption in the court system that can make them so hard to reverse. Impeccably researched and told with page-turning suspense as only John Grisham can deliver, Framed is the story of winning freedom when the battle already seems lost and the deck is stacked against you.

Sunday, August 17 at 10am in Room 108
Ever wonder why we sing, pray, pass the peace, or gather around the table each Sunday? Join us for this new quarterly class as we explore the meaning, history, and heart behind our worship practices. Whether you're new to church or have been in the pews for years, this conversation will deepen your understanding and enrich your experience of worship. Come discover how ancient rhythms meet everyday faith—and why it all still matters.

UWF Sunday & Lunch
August 17 is United Women in Faith Sunday at FUMC Denton. UWF members will be helping lead worship to celebrate the 156 years of the United Women in Faith and our predecessor organizations as we continue to advocate and support women, children and youth.
United Women in Faith is the largest U.S. denominational women’s mission organization. UWF has been advocating for and supporting programs to empower women and improve life for women, children and youth in the U.S. and internationally since 1869. The organization has had many names, but the mission has remained the same. Their core belief that, Love in Action Can Change the World, has not changed.
HISTORY OF UWF AT FUMC DENTON
In 1940, women at FUMC Denton organized their first small groups called circles. Throughout these 84 years, the intergenerational United Women in Faith at FUMC Denton have been active advocating for and supporting the missions and ministries of this organization. Using our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness, members in our local unit put love into action as we continue to advocate for and support Denton Christian Pre-School, Interfaith Ministries, Denton County Friends of the Family, Denton Association of Christian Women, Cumberland Youth and Family Services, UMCOR, two UWFaith National Mission Institutions located in Dallas, Bethlehem Center and Wesley Rankin Center. We have sponsored, initiated and led programs on social, climate and environmental justice issues at the local, district and conference levels. We are not done because empowering women, improving their lives and the lives of children and youth is ongoing.
YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
FUMC Denton consistently supports UWF, especially through your support of the Horizon Texas Conference UWFaith Mission project, the Jerri Savuto Girls Center in Kenya. A mission team from FUMC Denton traveled to Kenya this June to participate in the dedication of the center and help lead The Day of the Girl Celebration, an alternative rite of passage event.
By supporting the building of the center, you are providing a safe place for girls who have escaped forced marriages and the cruel, physically harmful and illegal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Your support has provided hope to these brave girls who say “No!” to FGM.
Please join us for lunch in Miller Center after worship today for an update from our mission team on the Jerri Savuto Girls Center, including a report on the dedication of the center and the Day of the Girl Celebration.

Book Description: Longitude is the dramatic human story of an epic scientific quest. The "longitude problem" was the thorniest dilemma of the eighteenth century. Lacking the ability to measure longitude, sailors throughout the great ages of exploration had been literally lost at sea.

Open Book Club: Happy Land
You don't need any qualifications to be part of this group, just an open mind and a love of stories. May we be transformed by these stories together! We meet monthly and take turns selecting a book. Discussion is free-style and informal.
Join us on Zoom Monday, July 14 at 6:30pm for a discussion of our next book: Happy Land by Dolen Perkins-Valdez Here’s a little about the book:
Nikki hasn’t seen her grandmother in years. So when the elder calls out of the blue with an urgent request for Nikki to visit her in the hills of western North Carolina, Nikki hesitates only for a moment. After years of silence in her family, due to a mysterious estrangement between her mother and grandmother, she’s determined to learn the truth while she still can. But instead of answers about the recent past, Mother Rita tells Nikki an incredible story of a kingdom on this very mountain, and of her great-great-great grandmother, Luella, who would become its queen. Inspired by true events, Happy Land is a transporting multi-generational novel about the stories that shape us and the dazzling courage it takes to dream.
