Queer Theology 101

Mondays, September 8, 15, 22, 29
7-8:30pm • Flinn Hall

Glow LGBTQIA+ Ministry invites you to a four-week class exploring what it means to be queer and Christian—without compromise. If you’ve ever wrestled with questions like “Can I be LGBTQIA+ and follow Jesus?” or “What does the Bible really say about LGBTQIA+ people?”—you are not alone, and you are not the first. Together, we’ll dig into scripture, unpack the “clobber passages,” explore inclusive readings, and reflect on how identity, gender, and sexuality intersect with faith.

Each session will include a short presentation followed by group conversations, led by queer leaders from Glow and supported by Pastors Scott and Raegan. Whether you’re deconstructing, reconstructing, or simply curious, you are welcome to join us! This space is created first and foremost for LGBTQIA+ people who are reconciling their faith and identity—but it’s also for the people who love them and are doing that work too. Whether you’re queer, questioning, or a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, or partner trying to understand how queerness and Christianity can coexist, this is a space to ask honest questions, explore new ideas, and discover what true affirmation looks like.

Come find community. Come ask your questions. Come see why we believe queerness is not only compatible with faith—but a holy reflection of the nature of God.

Men’s Book Club

Join our next Men’s Book Club at Zera’s Coffee, 420 E. McKinney, Denton. The book chosen is: Who Is Government?: The Untold Story of Public Service by Michael Lewis. Discussion will be encouraged and occasionally we may even talk about the book. Even if you don’t read, come and enjoy the fellowship. Please contact Bob Voss 972-965-9605 for more information.

Book Description: Who works for the government and why does their work matter? An urgent and absorbing civics lesson from an all-star team of writers and storytellers. The government is a vast, complex system that Americans pay for, rebel against, rely upon, dismiss, and celebrate. It’s also our shared resource for addressing the biggest problems of society. And it’s made up of people, mostly unrecognized and uncelebrated, doing work that can be deeply consequential and beneficial to everyone.

Community in Conversation Book Club (Healing Racism in Denton Book Club)

Healing Racism in Denton Gathering at Patchouli Joe's Books & Indulgences (221 Hickory St.)

Join us for the Community in Conversation—Denton Book Club as continue the conversation on Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine. This bold new book recounts mounting racial aggressions in ongoing encounters in twenty-first-century daily life and in the media. Some of these encounters are slights, seeming slips of the tongue, and some are intentional offensives in the classroom, at the supermarket, at home, on the tennis court with Serena Williams and the soccer field with Zinedine Zidane, online, on TV-everywhere, all the time. The accumulative stresses come to bear on a person's ability to speak, perform, and stay alive. Our addressability is tied to the state of our belonging, Rankine argues, as are our assumptions and expectations of citizenship. In essay, image, and poetry, Citizen is a powerful testament to the individual and collective effects of racism in our contemporary, often named "post-race" society.

What to Expect:
✅ Guided conversation on key themes
✅ Thought-provoking questions to spark discussion
✅ A welcoming space for diverse perspectives

This will be a safe, open, and engaging discussion where we explore Alexander’s insights and reflect on how this impacts our own community right here in Denton. Whether you’ve studied racism your whole life or are just starting, your voice is welcome!

Hosted by Glow, a ministry created by and for LGBTQIA+ people, with support from a Ministry With Grant from the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Open Book Club: My Friends

Open Book Club meets monthly and takes turns selecting a book. Discussion is free-style and informal. You don't need any qualifications to be part of this group, just an open mind and a love of stories. May we be transformed by these stories together!

Join us on Zoom Monday, July 14 at 6:30pm for a discussion of our next book: My Friends by Fredric Backman. Here’s a little about the book:

A group of teenagers find refuge from their bruising home lives by spending long summer days on an abandoned pier, telling silly jokes, sharing secrets, and committing small acts of rebellion. These lost souls find in each other a reason to get up each morning, a reason to dream, a reason to love. Out of that summer emerges a transcendent work of art, a painting that will unexpectedly be placed into eighteen-year-old Louisa’s care. She embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn how the painting came to be and to decide what to do with it. The closer she gets to the painting’s birthplace, the more nervous she becomes about what she’ll find. Louisa is proof that happy endings don’t always take the form we expect in this stunning testament to the transformative, timeless power of friendship and art.

Worship Series: The Thing We Hold

In our worship spaces, there are physical objects we are invited to interact with on a weekly basis, and the way we understand these objects (and the theology around them) is a helpful distinction for people searching out Christianity. Each week in September, we will focus on one object—the table, the Bible, the songbook, and the offering basket—and discuss what we believe and why it is grounding for us on a weekly basis.

International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on August 31 each year to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died as a result of drug overdose.

On this night, the courthouse and downtown skyline will light up purple in support of this cause. The event will include featured speakers, 40+ resource providers, live music, food, balloon art, prayers from our pastors, and a memorial. This is a free event open to the public. This year will feature live music from our FUMC Denton Modern Band and prayers from our pastors. Here’s what this event is all about:

  • Unite and educate the community against the opioid epidemic

  • Provide resources and support for individuals and families struggling with addiction

  • Reduce the stigma of overdose and addiction

  • Remember those who have lost their lives to overdose

Begins Sunday, August 31 | 10am | Room 336

Join the Harvest Sunday School Class this fall for a 12-week study of Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr. Rohr offers a fresh perspective on the second half of life, showing how what may feel like “falling down” can actually become “falling upward” into greater wisdom and spiritual richness. Together, we will reflect on how faith grows not only through success, but often through the struggles and setbacks that shape us.

Men’s Book Club

Join our next Men’s Book Club at Zera’s Coffee, 420 E. McKinney, Denton. The book chosen is: Framed: Astonishing True Stories of Wrongful Convictions by John Grisham & Jim McCloskey. Discussion will be encouraged and occasionally we may even talk about the book. Even if you don’t read, come and enjoy the fellowship. Please contact Bob Voss 972-965-9605 for more information.

Book Description: A fundamental principle of our legal system is a presumption of innocence, but once someone has been found guilty, there is very little room to prove doubt. These ten true stories shed light on Americans who were innocent but found guilty and forced to sacrifice friends, families, and decades of their lives to prison while the guilty parties remained free. In each of the stories, John Grisham and Jim McCloskey recount the dramatic hard-fought battles for exoneration. They take a close look at what leads to wrongful convictions in the first place and the racism, misconduct, flawed testimony, and corruption in the court system that can make them so hard to reverse. Impeccably researched and told with page-turning suspense as only John Grisham can deliver, Framed is the story of winning freedom when the battle already seems lost and the deck is stacked against you.

UWF Sunday & Lunch
Aug

UWF Sunday & Lunch

August 17 is United Women in Faith Sunday at FUMC Denton. UWF members will be helping lead worship to celebrate the 156 years of the United Women in Faith and our predecessor organizations as we continue to advocate and support women, children and youth.

United Women in Faith is the largest U.S. denominational women’s mission organization. UWF has been advocating for and supporting programs to empower women and improve life for women, children and youth in the U.S. and internationally since 1869. The organization has had many names, but the mission has remained the same. Their core belief that, Love in Action Can Change the World, has not changed.

HISTORY OF UWF AT FUMC DENTON

In 1940, women at FUMC Denton organized their first small groups called circles. Throughout these 84 years, the intergenerational United Women in Faith at FUMC Denton have been active advocating for and supporting the missions and ministries of this organization. Using our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness, members in our local unit put love into action as we continue to advocate for and support Denton Christian Pre-School, Interfaith Ministries, Denton County Friends of the Family, Denton Association of Christian Women, Cumberland Youth and Family Services, UMCOR, two UWFaith National Mission Institutions located in Dallas, Bethlehem Center and Wesley Rankin Center. We have sponsored, initiated and led programs on social, climate and environmental justice issues at the local, district and conference levels. We are not done because empowering women, improving their lives and the lives of children and youth is ongoing.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

FUMC Denton consistently supports UWF, especially through your support of the Horizon Texas Conference UWFaith Mission project, the Jerri Savuto Girls Center in Kenya. A mission team from FUMC Denton traveled to Kenya this June to participate in the dedication of the center and help lead The Day of the Girl Celebration, an alternative rite of passage event.

By supporting the building of the center, you are providing a safe place for girls who have escaped forced marriages and the cruel, physically harmful and illegal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Your support has provided hope to these brave girls who say “No!” to FGM.

Please join us for lunch in Miller Center after worship today for an update from our mission team on the Jerri Savuto Girls Center, including a report on the dedication of the center and the Day of the Girl Celebration.
