A lot of people have heard of the Enneagram, but it can be framed as categorization instead of a liberating framework. You are not “a number” and you will never be so reduced that you fit into a box. You are a magnificent child of God and the Enneagram offers 9 doorways to growing ever more fully into the image of God.
Most of us will identify more strongly with one of the doorways. Each doorway opens to a spacious understanding of how our lives have led us to the patterns that have guided us. But it doesn’t stop there. It also helps us understand the doorways and pathways of others. This increases understanding and appreciation, which results in better communication.
We also learn the unique gifts offered by way of each path and how exploring each path can enrich our relationships, our effectiveness, and our joy in living. We begin to see the face of God in each other, often especially in those for whom we’ve had the least love in the past. Richard Rohr describes it as a way to learn about the “wounds, the work, and the wisdom” that are uniquely ours to give and to receive through others. FUMC wants to truly live as a loving family that reflects that love into the community. This requires conscious choice and awareness as we strengthen our relationships within that family.
What gifts you will bring to the conversation! And what gifts the Enneagram will bring to you! Russ Hudson, another Enneagram expert, says the Enneagram gives us the keys to get out of the boxes in which we have trapped ourselves. As your facilitator, I have found this to be true for me and I am looking forward to the privilege of sharing this conversation with you. —Linda Fite
