A Week of Connection & Reflection: High School Mission Trip

High School Mission Trip Team in San Angelo, TX

This past week, the high school students of FUMC Denton spent a week serving in San Angelo, Texas doing flood relief work through Be the Neighbor and Week of Compassion.

The Smiley Face Team worked on replacing the siding of a house. This involved removing the old siding, installing new insulation, OSB and Tyvek, and then finally putting brand new siding on the house. This group was also able to rescue three stray kittens while installing the siding!

The Ice Cream Team served at multiple locations over the course of the week. They helped sort flood relief items for the Concho Valley Turning Point organization, they built two wheelchair ramps with the Texas Ramp Project, and also volunteered in the food pantry at Grace Christian Church.

Throughout the week, this group of students grew closer together and learned so many new things about themselves and each other. They spent a lot of time reflecting on the deeper systematic issues that came from the flooding last year. The students also spent a lot of time thinking about how they could better serve the Denton community once they returned. As of right now, the students hope to spend one Sunday night a month serving in the local community.

We want to thank everyone who wrote letters, prayed, or financially supported the trip! Our students are energized to continue the work of community care and are grateful for this experience! If you’d like to get involved in youth ministry or help with future opportunities like this for our students, contact Jack.
