Mission Corner: Food Crisis in Cuba

Mission Corner: Food Crisis in Cuba

The Methodist Church in Cuba has an urgent need to feed people. Our pastor friends in Cuba tell us that food is very hard to find and when it's found it's very expensive. Right now, people are waiting up to two days in line at food markets to get a basic ration. Cuba has been having a very difficult time economically because a major contributor to its economy is tourism. Because of the pandemic, tourism has virtually vanished.  People in Cuba are hungry and don't have many options for work or providing food for their families. Methodist pastors and their families are affected, too.

Checks can be written to FUMC Denton with Cuba Methodist Church on the memo line or click here to give online to help alleviate this crisis. FUMC Denton Mission Committee approved over $500 last month to be sent to Cuba out of the discretionary funds the Mission Committee has available. Pastor Alcibiades (Pastor Al) of the Iglesia Metodista en Cuba is so grateful for this support.

Denton ISD Meal Service Volunteer Opportunity (May 20 & 27)

Volunteers are needed on Wednesday, May 20 & 27.  Volunteers will arrive in their cars and be met by nurses to complete the questionnaire and have your temperatures taken. Once cleared, volunteers for Hickory Creek will be loading food onto a bus to deliver from a bus stop, similar to in the past. Those for Pecan Creek, once cleared, you will pop your trunks and Child Nutrition staff will place the “super bundles” of food in your cars.  You’ll be given a list of addresses with the number of meals to take to each home.  We’re trying to keep it to about 20 stops per volunteer.  The “super bundle” contains 2 bags of food per student, one shelf-stable and the other is fridge/freezer food.  One household could potentially have several students and super bundles to deliver to it.  We’re communicating with the families that the food will be delivered between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m., once volunteers get cleared and cars loaded at the campuses.

Volunteers must be able to comply with the following:

  1. Be under the age of 65.

  2. Not have any underlying health conditions (this is a question nurses will ask).

  3. If you are aware of anyone in your household who could be or is sick, you must not volunteer.

  4. Have your temperature taken on-site.

  5. Wear gloves, provided by Child Nutrition.

  6. Wear a mask, must bring one, or let me know ahead of time if need one.  We’re working to find some.

  7. Wear a hat, if you have one.

If you meet the above requirements, you can sign up for a shift by clicking here.  Once you’ve signed up and all shifts are filled, I’ll be sending specific details by Tuesday evening. This link DOES include the next two weeks’ sign-ups!

Lenten Rebuild (Cancelled due to COVID-19)

Every year during the season of Lent, FUMC Denton strives to serve our community through an annual project called Lenten Rebuild. We find folks in our community in need of home repair through Hearts for Homes or through connections in our church family. You can help by picking up trash, cleaning, offer your construction expertise, or serving a meal to the work crew! Whatever your skill level, you are invited to serve.
