UWF Sunday & Lunch

  • First United Methodist Church of Denton 201 South Locust Street Denton, TX, 76201 United States (map)

August 17 is United Women in Faith Sunday at FUMC Denton. UWF members will be helping lead worship to celebrate the 156 years of the United Women in Faith and our predecessor organizations as we continue to advocate and support women, children and youth.

United Women in Faith is the largest U.S. denominational women’s mission organization. UWF has been advocating for and supporting programs to empower women and improve life for women, children and youth in the U.S. and internationally since 1869. The organization has had many names, but the mission has remained the same. Their core belief that, Love in Action Can Change the World, has not changed.

HISTORY OF UWF AT FUMC DENTON

In 1940, women at FUMC Denton organized their first small groups called circles. Throughout these 84 years, the intergenerational United Women in Faith at FUMC Denton have been active advocating for and supporting the missions and ministries of this organization. Using our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness, members in our local unit put love into action as we continue to advocate for and support Denton Christian Pre-School, Interfaith Ministries, Denton County Friends of the Family, Denton Association of Christian Women, Cumberland Youth and Family Services, UMCOR, two UWFaith National Mission Institutions located in Dallas, Bethlehem Center and Wesley Rankin Center. We have sponsored, initiated and led programs on social, climate and environmental justice issues at the local, district and conference levels. We are not done because empowering women, improving their lives and the lives of children and youth is ongoing.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

FUMC Denton consistently supports UWF, especially through your support of the Horizon Texas Conference UWFaith Mission project, the Jerri Savuto Girls Center in Kenya. A mission team from FUMC Denton traveled to Kenya this June to participate in the dedication of the center and help lead The Day of the Girl Celebration, an alternative rite of passage event.

By supporting the building of the center, you are providing a safe place for girls who have escaped forced marriages and the cruel, physically harmful and illegal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Your support has provided hope to these brave girls who say “No!” to FGM.

Please join us for lunch in Miller Center after worship today for an update from our mission team on the Jerri Savuto Girls Center, including a report on the dedication of the center and the Day of the Girl Celebration.
