Storytelling Through Song: Maundy Thursday

This year’s Maundy Thursday service at FUMC Denton offered a powerful and unique retelling of the story of Jesus’ final days before his arrest using a powerful blend of scripture and secular music—each song offering fresh emotional insight into the familiar Holy Week story.

From Bob Dylan’s The Times They Are A-Changin’ to Joy Oladokun’s Look Up, each musical selection paired with its corresponding story from the Bible, inviting us to feel the heartbreak, betrayal, hope, and humanity of Holy Week in a whole new way. Many shared afterward how meaningful and surprisingly moving the music was—how it helped them experience these sacred moments from a different and deeply personal perspective.

The evening was a collaborative effort involving pastors, musicians, and church staff, whose planning and preparation shaped an experience that was both artistically moving and spiritually grounding. From handwashing and communion to the final notes of Skyfall, it was a night that carried profound meaning for all who gathered. A night of artistry and faith—of deep story and soul-stirring sound. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen and to all who came and participated with open hearts.
