Please join the Denton Taizé Community for a Service of Evening Prayer for the Academic Year in the Style of Taizé at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Sunday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m., as educators and students begin another challenging year.

What is Taizé?

Since 1940, Taizé, a small village in eastern France, has been home to an ecumenical community of brothers where prayer is the center of life. A portion of daily prayer time is spent singing brief, but beautiful meditative responses drawn from traditions of chant and folk music. Thousands of people, many of them youth, visit Taizé every year to participate in meditative retreats, and other communities modeled on the one at Taizé have sprung up around the world.

The Denton Taizé community is comprised of musicians, worship leaders, and clergy from a number of Denton churches, including Trinity Presbyterian Church, Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, First Christian Church, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, and First United Methodist Church. Pre-pandemic, the group collaborated to prepare four services a year, with participating churches sharing hosting responsibilities. After having canceled two plan services last spring, the group hopes to return to a full roster of services in the coming months, including the upcoming Evening Prayer service in August and a service for World Communion Sunday in October.

What is Evening Prayer?

Evening Prayer, or Vespers, is service of daily prayer that celebrates the light of Christ shining into the darkness of the world and features scripture readings, canticles, and intercessory prayer for enlightenment and peace.

How Can I Attend the Service?

St. Barnabas is located at 1200 N. Elm Street, Denton, with parking available on Elm and Second streets, as well as in the parking lot north of the church off Locust Street. We will update those joining us for this year’s service about COVID protocols as we get closer to Sunday, August 28.
