St. James AME Church is the oldest recorded Black church in the city of Denton, organized in 1875 and built by inhabitants of the original Quakertown community—and their historic church building is in trouble. The roof is failing, and engineers have installed temporary supports to keep the walls of the building from collapsing. As you can see in the photo, the exterior wall is about to collapse because the roof framing is failing apart (joists are disintegrating). The church has had to take out a loan to help pay for repairs, and needs help covering this cost as well as financial help going forward to complete the project and replace furnishings. Any donation you can contribute is greatly appreciated!
