Called Out: Amos

This week, we meet Amos, who we now know as a powerful voice for justice, particularly for the poor and oppressed. But in the culture of his day, his voice wasn’t one heard by society. He was a fig farmer, not a prophet or the son of a prophet. But who he was mattered and became part of his true purpose. His connection with the natural world and the natural order of things led him to understand that justice and righteousness, fairness and equality, were the natural, God-intended order of the universe. And just like a farmer flourishes when they work in harmony with the natural order, so does our whole world — and each of us. This wisdom has rolled down through generations and made an impact for God and for good far beyond Amos the farmer’s wildest dreams.

Like Amos, who you are matters, and is a part of God’s call on your life. As we listen to that call and follow the way of Jesus, we become who we truly are, and find a purpose for ourselves far beyond what we could hope or imagine.
