Back to Life: Rising Like Lazarus

Death is disturbing, so much so that even Jesus was “greatly disturbed” by its effects. In the Gospel of John, we read of the death of Lazarus. But the story does not end in death. Through the tears of Martha and Mary, the tears of their community, and Jesus’s tears God’s glory in life is shone. In the collective sorrow of Lazarus’ community, God’s creative works are found. The granting of life thought only possible from the Creator is passed onto us when Jesus commands Lazarus to leave the tomb. When Lazarus comes out, he is still bound, unable to truly live. The life which is first granted by the son of God is finally in our hands. Jesus’ commandment for life is to unbind Lazarus, unbind our neighbors, and let them go. Join Pastoral Intern, Will Atwood, as he shows us how we can use the power of resurrection in community with and for one another.
