Interwoven Table Talk & Time Capsule Reveal
Last Sunday, September 27, 2026, we headed over to Monroe for a potluck lunch and found seats at tables full of familiar faces and some brand new ones. Pastor Sheryl put together discussion questions for each table, and they were a great way to continue the discussion on what we'd been exploring all September. We talked about our relationships, what power and control look like in our lives, and how we're navigating technology and AI. There was a lot of honest, thoughtful conversation.
Then came the moment we'd all been waiting for. Hidden away in our archives, we recently found a time capsule sealed in 1976 with instructions to open it in 2026. And this seemed like a great time to do just that! It turns out the capsule was put together mostly by the church's Middle School group back in the day, which explains a lot about how delightful it was. Inside, we found:
Bulletins and newspapers from the time
Curriculum samples
Photos
A church directory
A hymnal
A handmade scroll with drawings and the Lord's Prayer
A magazine for kindergarteners with way too many words
And so much more!
Some of you in the room were actually around in 1976, and hearing you reminisce and laugh over what a group of middle schoolers decided was worth saving for the future was honestly the highlight of the day. Peeking into the lives of the people who sat in these same pews 50 years ago reminded us that we're part of a story much bigger than ourselves.
The capsule came with a little suggestion: that our youth ministry add their own time capsule to the box, to be opened in another 50 years. We’ll certainly have to get a new box, but our youth love that idea! We can't wait to see what our students decide to include, and to imagine someone in 2076 opening it to learn more about the legacy of inclusive belonging and shining God’s love that they stand will in.
