UMW Legislative Day & Climate Justice

Cynthia Rives and Karen Anderson-Lain joined UMW members from across the country to participate in the United Methodist Women UMW Climate Justice Federal Legislative Day on April 14th, 2021. They spoke with legislative staff from Rep. Stucky and Senator Cornyn’s offices about climate change. Karen Anderson-Lain explained, “While we don’t have the same position on climate change, I think our message that we need to find common ground was heard”. UMW is advocating for a just energy for all that includes supporting strategies to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2050 (based on 2010 levels); investing in modernizing crumbling infrastructure while reduce carbon emissions in public transportation; and enacting legislation that supports a just transition for workers in the energy industry that are impacted by these proposed changes and communities that are historically impacted by energy policies that disadvantage Indigenous peoples, communities of color, low wealth, and rural communities. Climate Justice is one of the social action missions for 2021-2024.

The North Central District of the North Texas Conference also held our spiritual growth event last Saturday with the UMW Spiritual Growth and Formation Specialist, Nora Cunningham. She did a wonderful job of explaining how climate justice is a Biblical concept and the steps we can take to make a big impact going forward. Please take advantage of the resources available on the UMW website and stay tuned for a Bible study coming sometime soon from Nora and Liz Lee.
