Open Book Club: "Magic City” by Jewell Parker Rhodes

  • First United Methodist Church of Denton 201 South Locust Street Denton, TX, 76201 United States (map)

Open Book Club is a group of people from Open Worship and First United Methodist Church of Denton who cares deeply about people, justice, and seek to find truth in literature. We are currently studying African American Literature with our co-facilitators, Pamela Sanders and Krystal Stroud and meeting on Zoom. You don't need any qualifications to be part of this group, just an open mind and a love of stories. We meet every other week to discuss what we've read and how it's impacted us. May we be transformed by these stories together!

Our next book will be Magic City by Jewell Parker Rhodes—a historical fiction novel about the Tulsa Massacre. With this year being the 100th anniversary, we thought this would be a timely and important read. Here’s a little about the book:

“Jewell Parker Rhodes’ powerful and unforgettable novel of racism, vigilantism, and injustice, weaves history, mysticism, and murder into a harrowing tale of dreams and violence gone awry. Magic City evokes one of the darkest chapters of twentieth century, Jim Crow America, painting an intimate portrait of the heroic but doomed stand that pitted the National Guard against a small band of black men determined to defend the prosperous town they had built.”

We will discuss this short novel over three gatherings, Monday nights July 5, July 19, and August 2 at 8 pm to discuss on Zoom. At the first meeting, we'll be discussing Chapters 1-11. We look forward to gathering with you! Join our Facebook group to access Zoom links.
