Open Book Club

  • First United Methodist Church of Denton 201 South Locust Street Denton, TX, 76201 United States (map)

Welcome to the Open Book Club! We're a group of people from Open Worship and First United Methodist Church of Denton who cares deeply about people, justice, and seek to find truth in literature.

We are currently studying African American Literature with our co-facilitators, Pamela Sanders and Krystal Stroud. You don't need any qualifications to be part of this group, just an open mind and a love of stories. We meet every other week to discuss what we've read and how it's impacted us. May we be transformed by these stories together!

Join Pamela Sanders & Krystal Stroud on Monday, September 14 at 8pm for our first Open Book Club gathering on Zoom. This will be our first introduction-type gathering. We will introduce ourselves to one another and Pamela will be giving us some background information on the author of our first book—"The Wedding" by Dorothy West. You will not need to have read or even purchased the book yet for this first meeting. We will begin reading/discussing the book itself the following week on September 21, meeting every other week from there. We're really looking forward to this journey with all of you!

You can also consider supporting our local bookstores or shopping from a local Black-owned bookstore—in the DFW area there are The Dock Bookshop in Fort Worth and the Pan-African Connection Bookstore in Dallas.

About the Facilitators:

Pamela Sanders is Mom to Buddy the tuxedo cat, Auntie to three nieces, and great-Auntie to four grandnieces. Her great passion is reading American Literature. She earned a PhD in English from Purdue University and her specializations included Multi-Ethnic American Lit, African American Lit, and Women‘s Studies. She taught at the university-level for eighteen years until having to take early medical retirement. She looks forward to sharing her favorite African American novels with you!

Krystal got her undergraduate degree in Literature from UNT and is a total nerd about stories in all the forms they present themselves—books being a favorite. She is really looking forward to intentionally reading stories by African American authors and taking this journey with all of you!
